"Robbing from other robbers"

That's what the last Newton brother, Willis,  said in an interview shortly before his death in 1979 at the age of 90 years old.

During their robbing spree the gang robbed more than 70 banks in Texas, the Midwest and Canada.  One train robbery, still holds the U.S. record, in which they got $3 Million.

The Newton Gang struck New Braunfels State Bank, located downtown a short distance from the courthouse, at 10 minutes past noon on March 9, 1922.

The robbery became celebrated in the annals of bank stick-up lore, said historian and writer G.R. Williamson of Kerrville, who is writing a book on the gang’s exploits.
