Jury seated in child sexual assault case

Testimony is expected to begin today in the case of alleged child predator Matthew Anderson.

Anderson, 31, was indicted in May on five counts of sexual assault and two counts of indecency with a child — accused of inappropriately touching a boy under 17 years old multiple times in December of 2005 and January of 2006.

Sources have identified Anderson as being affiliated in some capacity with a church in New Braunfels before being arrested in October of 2007. A source from that church has denied any relationship with Anderson.

Both prosecutors and Anderson’s defense attorney, Joseph E. Garcia III, declined to discuss the case before making opening statements.

Jury selection took most of the day Monday, with seven women and five men making up the jury, and opening statements are expected this morning starting at 8:30 in front of Comal County 433rd Judicial District Court Judge Dib Waldrip.

If convicted, Anderson faces 5 to 99 years in prison for each count of sexual assault, as well as two to 20 years for each count of indecency with a child, according to the Comal County District Attorney’s office.
