A 39-year-old San Antonio woman has been found guilty of charges that in 2006 she caused near-fatal brain injuries to a 5-month-old in her care.
A Bexar County jury of eight women and four men deliberated for about three hours before finding Aritzaid Santiago guilty of the offense of injury to a child.

Nathan Bonano, about to turn 3, has since recovered from the injuries, which required emergency brain surgery after he was unresponsive and listless. Doctors testified he had bled two-thirds of a pint of blood in his brain.

Prosecutors said that Nathan was a victim of "shaken baby syndrome."

The child's parents, Carlos and Brenda Bonano, kissed and had a long embrace in the courthouse hallway. They declined comment until after Santiago was sentenced, which is expected to happen Monday.
